Description: The Ross Prairie Trailhead contains approximately 1.5 acres of fenced parking; bathrooms and potable water are available as well as a horse wash, horse water and a trough. It is adjacent to a campground with 15 full service sites (several of which are designated equestrian sites), a bathhouse and dump station. Call (352)-427-4436 for rates, availability and reservations.
The Ross Prairie section, also called Utopia, has about 6 miles of singletrack horseback riding trails as well as about 3 miles of the multi-use limerock road which is suitable for riding or driving if your horses have shoes. The western end of the limerock road is connected to the Ross Prairie Trailhead via a ½ mile natural surface trail which is open to riding or driving. Diggings resulting from the historic ship canal make for some challenging terrain – expect at least 3/4 mile of short but steep sandy ups and downs on each singletrack trail.
Trail 1 follows the northern edge of the south berm in the digging, trail 2 follows the southern edge, both trails converge a short distance east of the trailhead. Short sections of trail in this area may be under water.
Equestrians may also access trails in the adjacent Ross Prairie State Forest from this trailhead.
Please note that SR 200, which forms the western border of this section of the Greenway, is a high speed road unsuitable for crossing with horses. Please use the Pruitt Trailhead to access trails west of SR 200.
